Replaced ECU and relay. Still won't start
Hey guys, my 2000 a4 1.8tq won't start. Took it to the dealer and said the ecu was fried so i got a new used one off ebay with the same number and a relay. Still won't start.
I'm "resetting" it now by taking the negative terminal off the battery for 1hr.
Do I have to take it to the dealer so they can reprogram it? Thanks!

so i tried restarting it after disconnecting the negative battery terminal for 1hr, turned the key so the dash lights comes on and let it sit for 15 min. still won't start.
i don't have a VAG...
but it def. does not need to be reprogrammed?

I'm no expert, but I think the ECU should run the engine right out of the box, with no special programming required.

Does your car have an aftermarket radio?
That will prevent the dealers diagnostic VAGtool communicating with the car, and they will then think the ECU is "fried".
Fried ECU is pretty unusual , just a thought.

the car is bone stock. i wonder if it can be the spark plugs or ignition. the car just won't turn over.
The only recoding is for automatic/ manual transmission, it will not stop the car starting.

i just looked this up last night and thought it applied to newer cars only since my a4 is a 2000 and its an actual key with lock and unlock buttons. i wondered how and why they would need to reprogram it... because my all plastic backup key used to start the car up also.
i did however find out that there is an icon with a key under a car if the immobilizer is engaged. but i don't think i have that icon, maybe its only in the european versions.
