Rough downshift
My 2001 A4 ATQ 2.8 clunks as it downshifts to first when coming to a stop...but only after the car has warmed up after 5 or 6 miles of driving, and also clunks when you go on or off the gas at speed when driving.
Did a search, and saw some comments, but I'm still confused. What have you done? Also, a guy at work with a new Passat had the same problem. He told me VW reprogrammed the transmission's software. Is that something to work with my Audi?

Rough shifting.
How many miles on the car? I 2nd the motor mount suggestion. I replaced ours at 64k, they were absolutely shot. You may want to change your trans fluid/filter (if Tip car). You can recode the trans with a VAG-Com. Good Luck.

Car is a 2.8 quattro tip with 33,000 miles. Would mounts go that fast, and why does it act up only when the engine's warmed up?
Is there a way I can check out the mounts myself? I don't have access to a lift, but have a good floor jack and also tire ramps.

how to check mounts?
If you can get the car up enough to remove the belly pan, you'll see the bottoms of the motor mounts. If you see a blackish/purplish substance(fluid, could be dried)on the bottom of the mounts then its time to replace them. The fluid is , and has leaked out of them.
The rough shifting when its warm is another issue. That rough shift or slamming into gear when its warm is not a good indicator for the Tip gearbox. I would change out the fluid and filter. That should not be happening at 33k.
Replacement of the mounts on our car made a "huge" difference, felt like a new car again, no vibrations. When those mounts go, they really translate alot of noise/vibration through the chassis. Good luck.
