Default rpm gauge falls to zero while driving

this is a very random question. i have a friend with a manual infinity with 140,000 she told me that every once in a while, she will be driving around 70ish on the interstate, and then her rpm gauge would fall to zero. she then stated that the gas pedal felt weird. this whole incident would last about 30 seconds, then the rpm gauge would go back up to its 3,000 rpms like normal. does anyone have a clue why it would be doing this .. thanks
