I don't know if this has been posted on here or not but this site repairs them and from what I gathered, they fix the problem that causes this issue. It looks like the flat ribbon in the clusters are the issue and they replace it with an improved one that makes the likelihood of reoccurance slim to none. As their site states. I have emailed them to see if they would do the same for Audis since the problem is similar. Prices are a bit high but instead of paying full price for a new cluster that will have the same problem eventually, its a fair alternative.

VDO Repair

i read up on a german board today that the cluster itself is held together by some rubber backing
plate and that that plate is held onto the cluster with some metal crimps, those need to be rebended to make it work. i havent taken my cluster out as my problem went away, i need someone else to pull theirs.

I have an extra one at home with good pixels but different mileage. I can't use but
I'll take it apart and mess around. I wish I had more knowledge on circuitry so i could understand the problem and come up with a solution, or even swap the screens out. I don't remember the mileage on it but i'd try it.
