Secondary Air Pump
The yellow "check engine" light has been on for about 6-months. So I finally drop the car off for service and they say the secondary air pump is ABOUT to fail. i.e.; it works fine now, but it is about to fail. They want $580 parts/labor to replace it. This sounds like a $10 PCV valve.
Can someone explain what this pump does and should I even replace it? If the pump does fail, will it leave me stranded? The car runs fine and just passed the VA emissions test.
Thanks,
-Russell

I had mine replaced twice in a month...
First time about 4 months after I bought the car. About a week after I got it back the check engine light came on again. Turns out it was the exact same problem. Luckily this was all under warranty (whew! I only had a few months left). I asked the dealer about it and he they told me these pumps go bad quite often. Apparently so!

If you don't change it...your car will run rich....
probably crappy while still cold. If you continue to run rich for a long time, you can experience cat convertor failure sooner or possibly o2 sensors needing to be replaced.
Not to metion that light is annoying...but hey, you lived with it for 6 months....
