Default shock testing?

I will be installing sport springs and shocks, and replacing some badly worn control arms on my non-sport A4 soon. I will soon have 7 used shocks, 4 front and 3 rear. 4 are higher milage than the other 3. Assuming they are all visually OK, how would I pick the best of the lot other than just by assuming the reported milage on the shocks is accurate? By how difficult it is to push it in and out?

Thanks

For all of the effort, i'd sooner buy new shocks than insall used ones.

Default I agree but.....

between control arms, heater fan, timing belt, water pump, MAF, various hoses and valves, chip, resonator, etc. this has not been the cheapest car I have owned. At least I can do the work myself...

Default Chip is not a maintainence issue, nor is resonator.

Don't cheap out on shocks, or you'll just be doing it again in a few months, unless teh used shocks are practically new.

Default Re: Chip is not a maintainence issue, nor is resonator.

3 of the shocks are low milage (14K according to the seller) and they were cheap. So I have two higher milage rear shocks to choose from. Your right the chip was my choice, the resonator was damaged by road debris.

Accepting that I am going to go with used shocks can you answer the question of how to pick the best one?

Default Just avoid ones which appear to be leaking any fluid, and ones which are very easy to compress..

They aren't going to be terribly hard, but get a feel for the stiffer ones, and use them. Generally, if no oil is leaking, they should all be relatively close in stifness. Good luck!!
