Default So i had some vibration at speeds 60 and above. I got balance and rotation vibration fixed. more....

I also had a slight pull to the right. I asked the guy to check the alignment and he said it didn't look like it needed to be done. I took my car to Merchants, and they said they could align quattro.

My questions are...
1) I only had 8K on the tires and had this vibration. How often should I get rotation and balance.

2) Is is possible to tell if I need an alignment buy just putting it on the lift and what not. Cause it still seems to pull to the right.

Thanks

rotate every 3 or 5k, if its pulling to the right you need an alignment.

balancing is only necessary if you exp. vibrations or the wheel weights came off.

Default Some ideas

Have you checked tire pressures? Same left and right?

You have unidirectional tire pattern? They mounted correctly as far as rotation direction?

You damaged a tire? Might try rotating fronts to backs and vice versa.

Any abnormal tire wear on one side or other (left or right)? Even though alignment is OK, a non-evenly worn tire might throw you.

One thought on alignment - drive on interstate for prob. 10 miles, then try to pull into a rest area. By hand, quickly check temperatures on inside and outside of each tire tread. Would give you an idea if there is really a misalignment if inside or outside is noticeably hotter than the other.

Default Pressure is good. Tires are ok except...

I have a slightly bent rim that was on the front. Now on the back and seems ok (Still need a new wheel)

Tread seems to be wearing even. and pattern is mounted right.

I will try the interstate test you mentioned. That's a good idea.

Thanks allot

Default Possible problems

1. Out of round tire
2. Alignment
3. Out of balance tire - check for places that have the Hunter equipment. See link

Hunter GSP 9700

Default check if any of your wheels are bent on the innerside which may not be

visible if you look from the outside.
and it's very doubtful that someone can tell whether you have an alignment prob just by "looking" w/o any further inspection.

Default I had questioned my service manager (a great guy, long gone) about this...

...shortly after buying my car, as it was pulling slowly to the right (no vibration). He said that the car is meant to slowly drift to the right when you let the wheel go, so that in case you fall asleep on the wheel it takes you to the right, run-off area... Anybody thinks this holds water?

Default I would not buy that. That is ridicoulous. What about those roads that have a cliff and not rumble

strips.
