advantages of one or the other. I can safely assume that powdercoating them would be better and the paint would probably peel off? Anything wrong with powdercoating? Thanks

Painting is just that, a wet liquid paint is sprayed on and it dries. Like Smokey said, it's cheaper and easier.
With powdercoating, an electric charge is passed through whatever is to be coated. A "dust" of paint is then sprayed and the electric charge on the item causes the dusting of paint to attract to and bond to the item. It provides a much more durable finish that won't scratch off so easily.
Powdercoating will look better. I've never heard of it weakening anything, but I don't have the facts to argue otherwise.

RS41AB is correct except I believe he forgot to mention the item then has to be baked in an oven so
that the powder metls together and forms a rather tough durable powder coated surface.
