Default Speaking of brakes

I keep seeing all of these brake mods/upgrades offered. If stock brakes can cause tires to skid (non-ABS cars) or activate ABS like on our A4s, then aren't the brakes essentially MORE powerful than the tire contact patch can handle already?

MEANING - shouldn't the upgrade in question be concerned with putting more rubber on the pavement to allow better stopping power, where the brake system already has enough power to stop the wheels relative to the car??? Just getting stronger brakes won't make my tires grip the road better, so I don't understand how upgrading them would get my car to stop better ...

Default Exactly... But my reason for getting a brake kit would be...

More for fade resistance. I don't have the money for this right now, but it never hurts to plan. Also, looking good is icing on the cake.

Default yes..tires are always before brakes

and non abs skid because the wheels are not spinning at all

you expect any tire to be able to just stop on a dime..without any sliding
IMPOSSIBLE..if it did..you would go right through the windshield

Default Re: Speaking of brakes

try slamming on your brakes from 70-0 a half dozen times, then you'll notice the brake fade starting to occur.

Default So what is brake fade

Does it mean my brakes are permanently damaged? Or will recover once they cool??? What does an upgrade do to prevent "fade" ...?

Default larger rotor surface allows for faster cooling

and take longer to heat up

Default they get too hot to effectively stop the car...

I once laid on the brakes kinda hard from 140...

140-110 fine...
110-90 kinda crappy...
90-70... virtually no brakes left...

bigger surface will grip more, and you are correct, they can only stop the car as well as the tires grip... but they will outperform stock brakes, and they will did it with consistent distances on run 10 as run 1.

remember, F1 cars can generate over 1 lateral G of braking power...

Default Re: So what is brake fade

Brake fade- your first stop might take 120' but by the 6-7th your car might only stop in say 140'

It's not permanent, it's a heat soak problem that will go away when they cool down.

brake upgrades are supposed to have better cooling capacity or heat resistance via larger rotors, better fluid, additional pistons, etc..

Default THANKS - what you say makes sense

Assuming, however, that I wouldn't tend to slam the brakes hard minute after minute, a wheel/tire upgrade would be a better first-do than a brake upgrade, I guess?
