stalling
my car keeps on stalling out in neutral. the tachometer keeps on going up and down. i went to the mechanic and he said i needed to get some part cleaned...can't remember the name. this happen to anyone else?

Idle control valve. It's a bitof a PITA to get off the car, and put back on, but cleaning it does..
work. I am going to clean the one on my wife's car tonight, hopefully I will remember to take pictures.

I have a '98 with 56,000. Today on the way to work it stalled 3 times. All when coming to a stop. I was watching the RPMs and they were bouncing between 100 and 800 when i pushed in the clutch. Then it would die. It started right up though. This has been happening since the cold weather came in. It typically occurs on the first drive of the morning in sub-40 degree weather. I took it into an Audi specialist and they said they couldn't pinpoint source of the problem because the VAG-tool didn't return any errors. They suggested taking it too a dealer.

You are describing my problem exactly. It did it for 15 minutes the other day. Every time I would push the clutch in, it would start the up and down dance. Never stalled but came damn close several times. I have a two year old 99.5 with only 20,000 miles on it and I consider a problem like this ridiculous for a >30K car. I am taking it to he dealership this Friday to have them look at it, but I have no confidence that they will fix it as I have taken it in before for the same problem. Can someone let me know if they figure out what the solution is with this problem.
