Default STEALERSHIP SAYING $1200 to fix OIL PAN??? What are my fix it myself options??

I have been changing my oil for a long time now. The other day when I was changing the oil I managed to strip the threading of the oil pan. When I pulled the bolt out I could see that the thread was stripped. I took my car to the stealership and they have stated that they do not cover it under warranty and estimated cost for new oil pan, gasket including labor is: $1100. My question is what other options do I have other than replacing the whole oil pan??

Can I just put in a bigger threaded insert and then weld it. I didn't think that this was going to cost me over $400 to fix. The dealer said that the oil pan is going to cost me $400 which is not correct. I looked it up and found one for $160. They said that they won't put it in for me unless I go with their $400 oil pan. Well anyways any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Jay

if you can change your own oil, you should be able to install a new oil pan.

Default Yep. These guys have the right idea......

I'm sure you could find a reputable independent shop that'd install that oil pan for you, & you'd be out the door under $600, easy.

Default unless you have some magic tools to get to the two bolts

UrS4 posted pics of those tools once..that were flat enough to get to the two oil pan bolts.

When the garage did mine, they did it the hard way though.. not a DIY job imho, without a lift

Default I wouldn't change a 1.8T oilpan without a lift

Believe me, I have had countless 1.8T oil pans off for sludge concerns...a lift and a screwjack are very necessary to do that job quickly.
