Steering rack problems(long)

Brought my car into Clair for its first service (7500mi) this morning and while the service advisor was writing up the order, I mentioned that the power steering was starting to make some noise, started happening this past Monday. I also elected to have them put in Mobil one (they charged 17.60 for the difference from the dino oil). Waited around for about an hour, then the service advisor came over and told me that the my steering rack was leaking and would need replacing. A search of the archives shows that this has happened to a number of people. My question is:If you've had your steering rack replaced because of bad seals, has there been any repeat problems? How long has it been since the replacement?Thanks! Dave W 98.5 2.8QM - drippy steeringBTW - really happy with Clair service, I didn't buy the car from them, but they will have a car for me to drive while mine is in for the repair.

My steering rack was replaced because of leaky seals at 20-25,000 miles. So far it's OK and I have 35,000 miles on odometer.E 86 4KS 96 A4QM

Kind of a groaning noise turning the steering wheel while stopped, sounds like the power steering is really straining.

From info in the archives, it could also just be a loose clamp, but the noise is from the power steering fluid being low...Good luck!

Power Steering Advice

The groaning is caused by the lack of hydraulic fluid. Buy some G002000 Audi hydraulic fluid and keep it filled until you get your A4 to the dealership. If not, you may damage or wear other related parts that Audi may not deem worth replacing. You may end up paying for it after the warranty.E
