Stereo code lock problems

I bought a used 99 A4 avant and the Symphony stereo was locked in safe mode. I have the manual for it with the code, followed the instructions to unlock it and it didn't work. So I went to the dealer, they pulled the radio and indeed it had a different serial number than what was listed in the manual. So someone changed the unit. They generated a new code, and that didn't work either. They told me maybe it was locked up from guessing wrong twice. I left it on for the prescribed hour and tried again. No workie. They said there might be a bigger problem with my unit. I suspect they may have made a mistake in the code generation. Has anyone had experience with this? Do the Symphony units ever get into a state where they cannot be unlocked, even with a newly generated code?

I had the same thing happen to me when I bought a used 986. The radio was replaced w/o me knowing and the radio code supplied in the manual didn't work. Luckily, I only had to fax over my license to the dealership and they were able to give me the correct code based on the serial# that I provided them from the Becker radio. Is this a dealership or Vic's local car lot? Whatever the case, somebody has to remove there head from their *** and produce a valid code. good luck.
