Sticking solenoids in 1.8T Tip Transmission
Hi guys,
I've determined that the tranny solenoids are sticking, or that I have a clogged valve body in my transmission, leading to rough shifting. I have the OEM fluid and filter kit, and am planning to do the change soon, but would like to know: does the OEM Pentosin ATF have a strong enough detergent in it to free up any sticking valves or the solenoids, or would it be recommended that I put in an additive to the ATF while doing the change?
If I should include and additive, what should it be? Lucas Trans Fix, Seafoam Trans Tune?
Thanks!

I'd start with the new filter, clean the pan and magnets spotless, then run a couple of changes of ATF. Two changes gets you to about 90% fresh fluid. I am using Valvoline MaxLife Dex/Merc in three of these ZF 5-speeds, do WOT onramp runs to redline every day with my almost 200K mile trans, no problems at all. This is the Valvoline page:

So I'd clean the pan and change the filter and ATF, then later drain/refill without removing the pan. You'll miss a few ounces with the pan on, but there's about 3 quarts in the converter anyway. If things don't improve, then it will make sense to consider overhauling the valve body.

I also recommend the fluid and filter change, if that does not work, i have had very good results with seafoam trans tune with Audi. then change fluid again. but most of the time a simple fluid/filter change is all you need.
