Well, you'll need 18's with winters eventually...
the question is do you want to spend money on that now, or do you need to wait until next year? If you can afford it now, just get them. You'll get a little more traction and control from a winter tire than you can expect from a half worn stocker.

good point, i was thinking i might get new 17's this summer..
so i might be able to just get 17" winter tires and then swap at season change, but if i end up getting 18's then i will have to throw down for some 18" winter tires anyway.

Well, it seems you're going to try to use one set of rims, and two sets of tires...
You realize you'll spend $120/year swapping tires onto the single set of rims? You'll probably also incur wear and tear (in the form of scratches) on those rims as you'll be repeatedly mounting and dismounting tires on them.
My suggestion was to just get a separate set of winter tires AND rims. If 17" rims will clear your big brake kit, then by all means, get a 17" set for winter use. 18's for summer.
