stop the insanity!!
According to a report issued this year by the University of North Carolina's Highway Safety Research Center <http://www.hsrc.unc.edu/pressrelease/distraction.htm>, 1.5% of serious crashes are the result of distraction due to cell-phone use.
Anyone care to guess what the percentage is for eating or drinking in the car?? Try 1.7%
Ok, so it's a hot July day and you need to crank up the air conditioning. 2.8% of serious crashes are due to adjusting vehicle or climate controls.
Does it sometimes seem like you're the one who's always driving everyone else around? You just might have an excuse to drive solo next time since 10.9% of accidents are due to distraction by another occupant in the car.
How many times have you thought, "This radio station sucks. I'll just change the station". You might end up in the 11.4% of serious crashes due to adjusting a radio or CD player.
I think if the government (federal or state) is going to make cell-phone use illegal, they'd better outlaw air conditioning controls within reach of the driver. Let's only let the shotgun passenger control the temperature because that would be safer.
How about if we only permit car radios that allow you to set the station before you start the car, but once it's in motion, no changing the dial? I bet the radio stations would love that one.
We already have a law against reckless driving and I'm all in favor for that one. I don't want some idiot swerving into my car because he's drunk, tired, or just distracted, but do we really need another law on the books to specifically target cell-phone users?

Re: stop the insanity!!
Hey, I'm for restricting use while driving. I know that the few times I use my cell while driving, my attention to the road is far less than when playing with the stereo, etc. A lot of people I know admit the same, and I've had a lot of close calls with people using their phone while driving. People using the cells don't get into the accident, they just cause it. That's why the stat is low.

actually I agree about 100.1%, but its also common sense of every driver.....
Ive also used my phone to report the driver who caused an accident while on the phone as well...so i could have commited a crime while reporting one...the irony is overwhelming!!
