Default Stupid question....

Will a 225/45/17 tire on stock suspension create a greater or smaller gap than a 225/55/17 tire on stock suspension?

The 225 45 will have a smaller diameter, thus, more gap.

You would never use a 225/55/17 on an A4 anyways. Wrong size.

Default Hypothetical answer...

A taller tire has a larger radius and by that will produce a "smaller gap" as you put it.

However a tire taller than the 12.45" radius of the stock and optional tires on an A4 will have significant negative effect on the cars performance. The 225/55/17 tire you propose is almost an inch in radius taller and will be about 7.5% too large. In fact I am not sure if it will even clear basic suspension components.

Default Depending on offset of the wheel and willingness to roll fenders...

...you can get 235 widths in there. You need to maintain the stock overall diameter as closely as you can and that will define the ratio you can use with a given width and wheel diameter. Check this URL for a way to do some figuring...

http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html</a

Default something you should know...

225/45 17 =
width of the tires / the height in % respect to the width

you cannot use the thicker tire to filled up the fender gap because if you run say 225/75 17 (exaggerate)
you'll have too much sidewall which in turn when you are turning, your tires will twist, hence comprimising handling.

Default 45 is your only option. Otherwise you would change the outer diameter of the tire....

The car is engineered to work with a certain diameter tire. You don't want to mess with that.
