Ever since I bought this car (98 A4 1.8TQ, 53k miles at purchase), I have had problems with the car surging and stumbling under light to moderate acceleration. You can feel the car sloppily accelerate, as if I were pulsing the gas pedal. The effect of the car surging and stumbling is definitely audible to anybody in the car.

It seems like I have this problem only after the car is slightly warmed up. The feeling is easily reproducible in tip mode and slightly less noticeable in auto. I have had some pretty serious issues with this car that almost made me trade it back to the dealer at their loss.

This car could technically be considered a lemon for the amount of hours put in to fix a tranny problem I had. Took four weeks to fix the problem and I had to bring it back for another 2 days afterwards. I am wondering if there are any other options for me to get this relatively minor problem finally nailed.

Here is a list of the work done to it since I bought it:

- new MAF
- new head gaskets (not just seals, the whole deal)
- new power steering rack and tie rods in front
- completely new transmission
- new solenoid on turbo
- GIAC chip (my addition of course, didn't affect the surging either way)
- very recently had an alignment

FYI, I only kept the car because all work was done on service dept's bill and I was given a nice loaner and comp'ed gas money. I really dig Audi's and am a repeat customer, so I am really hoping against hope that there is a reasonable explanation/fix to this problem.

hmmm.... all of that and no bpv replacement?

 

Would BPV be a factor even at low speeds?

 

then there is also the N75 (I think that is the number) valve.. i believe.. that can also affect driveability.
