switchblade key remote programming

I bought a switchblade remote on Ebay after going through all the archives on getting a new key/remote. I had the key cut today and the remote is one piece... I tried programming it from the tech. archive and from many other members posts... But it isnt working... I have the 3 button remote to be used on a early 98 a4 2.8qm and after trying some similar batteries(1616 instead of 1620 both 3v almost same size) I am a little disheartened? Any advice? Any key thing I might be missing/overlooking?

well, i know almost nothing about the remotes, but here is my experience...

my remote has to almost be up the tailpipe (read: very close to the car) to work. i thought it was the batteries, so i took my remote apart and tested the voltage of the batteries with my DMM. both batts were showing 3.03 volts, so i assumed they were ok, and concluded that for some reason i have to be very close to my to use the remote. well...after i put everything back together on the remote, none of the functions worked at all. i figured i lost the memory and Iwould have to reprogram it. Well, two stops later (the mall, and my parent's house) the remote started working again. i am just guessing but maybe it had to 'align' with the receiver by being in the car/in the ignition...? i might have just made myself sound like the biggest moron, but oh well...
