Synthetic oil questions...
Well, I took my TT in for my first service at 5000 miles yesterday. I told the Service Manager that I'd like to switch to Mobil1 and I asked if he could make me a "deal" on it. He said that he would do $3.30 per quart, which I thought was very fair.
When I picked up the car, I saw that they had put 5w50 in the TT. Mobil1 doesn't make a 5w50 oil. I called today, and it seems that they use Castrol Syntec instead of Mobil1. The Service Manager felt that the 5w50 offered a greater degree of protection, and Castrol was their de facto synthetic oil.
Now I must say that both the dealer and the service department have been very good so far, but I do have several questions.
1. Should I be annoyed that Castrol was used when Mobil1 was specified, or should I let that go as the dealer is already making me a good price on the synthetic?
2. Is the Syntec as good as Mobil1? Is it close? Is their any evidence one way or the other?
3. What about the 5w50 weight, does that seem reasonable? (I live in Southern California where it rarely gets cold, if that matters).
Thanks in advance for your comments!
Re: Synthetic oil responses (long)...
The Audi dealer std. is Castrol (maybe they get a deal?). Mobil does make a 5w40 and a 5w50 (europe only). Neither are energy conserving oils (old II). They are the universal compromise oil for places like the Sahara with cold nights and hot days.
The price is good.
Syntec is excellent, comparable.
Regardless of uninformed opinions, 5w30 is the FACTORY SPEC!!! Unless you live and race in death valley, 5w30/10w40 are the ideal oils for you. Those who disagree with the above statement please check out thier manual, previous technical postings in the archives, and the Mobil 1/castrol/redline/amsoil websites. (Synthetic oil is NOT the same as straight dino oil) Paranoid owners use whatever your heart desires because facts will not have any influence on you.

Re: Synthetic oil questions...
I guess that wasn't as good a price as I thought. Oh well, Castrol is fine. By the way, one guy on the M5 board who lives in Germany and used to drive a 400hp M5 at 165mph for sustained periods on the Autobahn, swears by Castrol 5W50. Of course, it gets a lot colder in Germany than San Diego.
KJK 91 M5
