Tapping Noise

My 97 A4TQ1.8 started to make an internal "tapping" niose that comes from the front of the engine near the plastic timing belt cover. I thought it was rubbing but it does not appear to. It only makes this noise under 2600 RPM and sounds smooth over that. Is there an internal valve or other process that changes at 2600 RPM so I can isolate the issue. Thanks for your help and experience.

Sure it's not a valve?

A hydraulic lifter dying will cause a high-note tapping noise. Can it be from the farthest-forward cylinder?
