Tapping noises from the engine?

I am not sure if this is normal, but there is a tapping noise coming from the engine, especially after starting the car up. Is this normal? It is definitly from the under the hood.

Are you sure it isn't just your valves ticking? Mine do this and can be heard mostly at idle.

Valves

after spark. The lifters are pumping. Be sure to run some 5w-30, esp during the cold seasons.

I had this too when my car was driven cold at night. -- Really slight detonation?

its the lifters...perfectly normal...i get it too..you might want to use a thicker oil...

Thanks All, i am using 10W30, will probably change at next oil service few hundred miles

Lifter noise.

If you hear the noise only at startup for a few secs it is ok and normal. If you car ticks when warm at an idle you should try a thinner oil. Any good 5w oil will do. Running thicker oil will cause the noise to increase as the bleed holes on the tiny hydralic lifters are small. With thicker oil you will get less oil into the lifter there by increasing noise.
