Tie Rod Recall Details
From the Recall Circular that was sent to the dealers...
"Dear Audi Dealer,
This is to inform you of the initiation of a voluntary safety recall involving some 1998 and 1999 model Audi A4, A6 and A8 vehicles. The recall involves the replacement of tie rod ends.
Problem Description: It is possible that the dust/moisture seals of the affected vehicles' tie rods may not seal properly resulting in premature wear.
Vehicle Identification Number Range: The vehicles affected by the recall action are within the following vehicle identification number range:
Audi A4
WA074553 to XA000563
Audi A6
WN079469 to XN002246
Audi A8
WN006206 to XN000894
Please note that the above VINs represent the lowest and highest serial numbers of affected vehicles.
Remedial Action: Replace right and left side tie rod ends.
Owner Notification Mailing: Audi of America, inc. will mail first class notification letters to all known owners of affected vehicles on or about September 21, 1999.
Parts Availablility: The customer letter indicates October 15, 1999 as the earliest date replacement parts will be available at Audi dealerships."
So, those of us with cars within the VIN range get new tie rod ends and a front end alignment.
The work is expected to take about two and a half hours.

I will bring my girlfriend's 98.5 A4 1.8T into service sometimes next Saturday....
the service advisor told me they have to use 2-3 hours of labors to fix the problems. I reserved an Audi loaner, also just like my Jetta recall earlier this year, they will fill up full tank of gas paid by Audi of America/Canada.

I feel dumb for asking but....
How many digits is the VIN supposed to be? I thought mine was 17 but the VINs you posted are only 8 long?
Also, part of my VIN has "WA..." in it and later on there is a string that starts with "XA" so I need to know how to check.
Please help. Thanks in advance.

Re: I feel dumb for asking but....
The first nine characters indicate the model, etc of the car. For the last eight characters (which are the important ones in this case) W=1998 (or X=1999), the A indicates that the car was manufactured in Ingolstadt, and the last six numbers constitute the sequential production number. So if your 99.5 has a sequential production number higher than 0000563 you are in the clear (this time anyway!)
