Default Timing Belt Question

Hey Guys,

Quick question about the timing belt. I bought my A4 used at about 35k miles back in 2003, and I'm at 54k now. I am "lightly" modded with a chip and BPV, am I good to 60k? I kind of want to wait for the warmer summer weather before tacking the timing belt change, but I did some searching and found quite a few A4 owners timing belt's failing before 60k. My plan was to get to around 59k, by the time I reach this mileage a few months will past, and we'll be in summer, and then purchasing ECS's timing belt kit to change the tensioner, belt, waterpump, etc etc. But after reading all the failure stories maybe I should replace earlier? What do you all think? 99.5 A4 1.8T (with as far as I know the original timing belt) and at 54K miles. Thanks.

Default What year is it?

I think it was the 1999s or somewhere around there that had issue with the Timing Belt breaking early. I REALLY doubt it's that big of an issue because I'm sure there's a zillion 1.8T's out there that went past 60k before having their belt changed. If the manual says it should be changed at 80k it means it will likely last on average till 100k but you should change it at 80k. My guess is it's a fluke that some broke before 60k otherwise you would hear a lot more about it. My advice, don't worry about it till summer, if it breaks before then it's because God hates you. :-) J/K

Default I'm sure you have plenty of time

I have a 99.5 and waited until about 70K to do the timing belt change and waterpump, etc. Most of the time the tensioner breaks before the belt. I'd say keep your eye on it, but you can't, haha.

I would guess you have until summer.
