Default Timing Belt Replacement Warning

It happened to my friend's 92 Accord coupe last weekend.

Just a word of advice on timing belt replacement: Don't wait til the last minute or else serious damages can occur to the engine.

Does this cost sound reasonable?

---

Due to timing belt failure occurred on a 1992 Honda Accord Coupe on 8/26/2000 (Saturday), the mechanic prepared this repair estimate upon inspection of the vehicle:

- Checked ignition and fuel system.
- Checked computer diagnostics.
- Traced problem to timing belt jumping time due -to severely loose timing belt.
- Reset timing belt and started vehicle.
- Checked dead misfire on 2 cylinders and performed compression test -- no compression 2 cylinders.
- Advised customer that slipped timing belt caused bent valves.
- Advised customer that vehicle needs valve job to repair.
- Customer states timing belt recently checked elsewhere.
- Approximate cost for repairs $1200 - $1500 in Trenton/Princeton, NJ

Currently the engine vibrates violently when started.

Default Actually, it depends on the type of engine the car has, but the A4 has the "bad" one

If the engine is an interference engine (as the A4 1.8T engines are) then a broken timing belt = f*cked up engine. If the engine is a non-interference engine then a broken timing belt will result in the engine shutting down.

Audi recommends changing the timing belt at 90,000 miles, however most on here recommend 60,000 to be safe. It's about $400 to have the belt changed, and, as you pointed out, about $1200 to have the engine fixed if it breaks on you.

Default The belt broke on my '88 Civic too, somehow I got lucky and didn't do ANY valve damage!...

I was pretty poor at the time too. Damn was I happy when the mechanic started it up after putting on the new belt and it ran fine.

Default I broke the belt on my '86 Civic Si, somehow "knew" that was it

i coasted to a stop and thoughtfully did not try to restart her. NO DAMAGE. i was extremely lucky they said. at high revs the engine started to flutter and miss, etc., and i somehow, just knew to stop the engine imediately. change your timing belt on schedule!
boki

while you're at it might as well get the water pump, etc., too, so figure $700-900.
