Default Transmission Issues

When i first bought my car (24K), the transition from gear to gear felt very smooth. Now the transition isn't as smooth and i have to balance it out alot. I was wondering if i should be worried? I only have 27K on my car. Also from time to time, I have trouble putting it into first gear. The dealer says that nothing is wrong. Any information would be helpful.

do you downshift, or throw it to neutral a lot when approaching a stop?

Default Sounds familiar...

My tranny crapped out just before 30k miles. That's the first manual tranny I've ever had problems with. From the beginning, it was ocassionaly impossible to shift from second to third. Dealer found nothing. Finally the 3rd gear got noisy. 3rd gear and main bearing were shot. Took 6 weeks to get the car fixed, because the dealer couldn't get the parts, then he didn't have a necessary special tool, and AOA wouldn't spring for a new tranny. Then they needed another few days, because the mechanic put the tranny back together incorrectly. One gear wouldn't work. I decided then I'd never again buy another Audi, because the customer service (from the dealer and AOA) was extremely ****ty, and because they were obviously inacapable of getting the car fixed properly and in a timely manner. yet they were always very arrogant and nonchalant. Bastards.

Good luck!

Default please explain for ones like myself

i am new to driving stick so i don't want to destroy my tranny. so your saying don't downshift to a stop and don't put it in neutral either? then what just depress clutch and hold it until stopped or begining to move again? how about on steep down hills, is it bad to go in neutral on those?

thanks!

Default Your transmission is designed for shifting...

While it's true that downshifting causes more wear than upshifting, it's nothing to worry about. You could of course double-clutch to avoid synchro and clutch wear as much as possible. ;-)

However, let common sense prevail. Don't slam the shifter into gears - easy does it. Usually, it's not necessary to downshift into first gear (unless you drive downhill in San Francisco!). Brake pads are cheap, the clutch isn't.

Default true... very true, since my 45k mile car that that i got last week...

already has a shot clutch, the mechanic at new country took me on a road test and told me. I have to work on getting them to put a new clutch in for free. and it is difficult to put the car in first already. I will use that as another reason for the replacement.

Thanks!
