trying to remove the flywheel
I got the pressure plate and clutch plate off, now I'm looking at the dual mass flywheel. I'm following xr4tic's instructions, they say the FW is bolted on with 17mm bolts - but I'm seeing 12 point "star shaped" sockets, similar to the ones that bolt the drive shafts to the transmission. I tried to get one off with my impact wrench, but it won't come off and I'm starting to strip the 12 point tool that I have. Can anyone offer advice on this?
Also, do I even need to take off the flywheel? It's discolored, but when do I know that I need to resurface it? Or do I always have to?

I locked the flywheel/crank from turning and used a long breaker bar. The tool to lock the flywheel
is available from Zelenda (among others).
Take a picture of the flywheel surface and the clutch disc to show the surface condition. It's nearly impossible to offer advise from a description only .. not that pictures are a gaurenteee.

Hard to tell from that picture but I think you might get away with a bit of hand sanding to clean
the surface up a bit. Perhaps do that and post another picture prior to putting the new clutch in?

Dont remove the flywheel....
It's nearly imposible to find a local shop that will be able to resurface a DMFW. By looking at the pictures you posted of the flywheel i'd say just attack it with a couple Scotch pads untill the surface is dull looking, you will need someone else to take over after your arms get sore

Second on the scotch brite, although there are powered alternatives
When I did this job on my Fiero I brought the flywheel to a clutch shop thinking it needed to be turned. But they slid it under a drill press with a scotch brite rotating pad and it cleaned up just fine, a nice crosshatch in no time.
They make chuckable rotating pads that will save you lots of work and let you do it in place. Get a good 110 volt drill that won't wear down on you and clean it as evenly as possible. You can practice on the pressure plate.
Don't folks usually replace the pressure plate along with the disk? Considering the price and work of replacing it...
