Turbo in need of replacement? How difficult?
I have STFA, and cant find a good answer. I read the FAQ, and find the article to be unclear. I am a relatively experienced (for a college student) mechanic. I have done a small amount of work on my 1.8t before, including a new radiator.
I am getting a whine that is not turbo spool at 3100-3200 rpm and lasting until 3400. It is loud in first, audible in second, and discernible in third. I am guessing it is my turbo starting to go; this whine is about two weeks old.
This car is getting to me- the clutch is soon, rear diff leaking, cam tensioner leaking, just put control arms, it needs brakes badly, turbo going... I am honestly considering selling. I love this car, but as a student, just cannot afford it.
alright, my list of questions:
a) how hard is it to do a turbo install?
b)where can I get my hands on an affordable turbo (maybe K04?)
c)is it worth keeping this car? I just dont know anymore. The dealer wants $2200 to do the clutch. I know I can get it done for less, but it will still be expensive.

Turbo for the inexperince is not hard just super time consumming
because of the little bolts and clamps and if you have big hands it is going to be a biatch. It will take about 6 hours and 4 hours if you are super prepared. If you are going to take breaks to swear at the car or eat and crap like that it will take around 8.
K04 cost about 700 for new, I would say go with a new one - bad experience with old - old goes for around 400 if you have the *****.
Depending on where you live the clutch can be done indy shops that AW know and trust with good deals. So tell as where you live or ask if you can shadow someone around here doing their clutch to learn or offer compensation for helping you.

New Hampshire; I have heard that Northern European Automotive does cheap clutches, but I know
nothing about them or their work, not to mention their actual price

I dont know what the deal is with the whining turbo, mine has been making noise for the past 2.5
years and it hasn't died yet. I was messing around with a camera mount a few weeks ago and taped it. The sound is pretty loud in person

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h89izm7EorI
