Turn Off The Dash Lights?

Why would you want them off?
I would suspect that there is no way to turn them off without electrical systems modification. Due to our litigousness, it's probably illegal for car manufacturers to allow all the instrument lights to be turned off. Saab does it for all except the speedo, but other lights come on as warnings come up, i.e., if fuel is low, the gauge is then lit up.
Dave
My reason...
I can't answer for gramps but I would prefer to be able to shut off dash lights due to my eyes being very sensitive to light. Driving on unlit roads at night when the dash lights are blazing into my eyes can be very bothersome to my eyes (tiring and sometimes "painful" depending on the dash lighting).
However, in my A4, the red lights are quite soothing and turning them down pretty much keeps my eyes happy. However, in every other car where they have those super-bright colors is where I would like to be able to shut them off. And don't even start on the new VW purple dash lighting - yeowch!
