Upgrade to the spouse's side of the garage today...(puts on flame suit, just in case)
new Ford Edge SE 2008
Got employee pricing with year end rebate through our dealer chain.
Below $22k , base FWD SE with just one upgrade package , 265hp (7.4 sec 0-60), 18" wheels, Michelins , 6 Disc CD/MP3 player, wheel controls,auto headlamps,interior lamp package,traction/stability control, etc.
Was too low to pass up and not a typical Ford.
Same platform as the Mazda CX-7, which I think shares some Mazda6 components.
Fast and handles great for an SUV. Only real negative reviews are on brakes so an upgrade will be in order after a few miles are on it. Will take delivery early next week. The old van was sold by the time I left work . I had three people interested due to it being clean/1 owner /29-30 mpg highway .

Ugh, I really hate the edge. Looks like an egg with four wheels. Speaking of wheels, the factory
chrome ones are just plain ugly.
Don't even start me on the Flex.

We didn't go chrome ,we got painted 18" wheels , black roof spoiler/mirrors/handles/lowers
that combo downplays the "eggness" of it . I do also think its egglike but don't mind it so much. The interior quality I think is above some GM vehicles which I know isn't saying a lot ,but for the price is good. The drive is what changed my mind, can't believe how quick it is. It was the best bang for the buck and what the other half liked . She didn't want leather or a guy car(read that as fewer switches/gadgets) so we were limited. She actually didn't want navigation or climate control. I will add bluetooth, rear step cover and cargo compartment cover ,but thats about it. Feels like being in a Jeep because of the ride height but its very quiet ,better than the Audi in that aspect. Maybe a hitch someday ,it has a 3500 lb towing capacity .

Fusion is supposed to be a fair ride . Our other choice was also Ford , Taurus X
that shares some Volvo stuff, just couldn't find one with the right trim. Most of the remaining 2008 stock had leather. No other manufacturer could keep it as simple as she wanted or under 25k at my employee price. You'll find this amazing when you consider my in company choices of 17 domsetic/foreign makes. My wife is picky ,so for me to call and get her to drive a car and her buy the first we drove was an achievement . We did web shop for about 4 hrs together ,but I had spent maybe 18-20 hrs research by myself.
