upper control arm grease.....

Just changed my upper curved control arms. I opened up the old ones and there was basically nothing resembling grease left, it was all dried up. The rubber was not damaged in any way so I don't see why moisture would have gotten in there.
I changed all control arms about 25k miles ago, ordered a complete kit from ecstuning. I think they are Meyle.
I know you can fit grease fittings on them but still, the darn things ought to have been designed properly in the first place.
Is this common?

i inject my own grease about every 50K miles.
i read on a german forum that the reason the control arms fail is because the grease dries up, and the reason the grease dries up is due to braking heat.

Once you penetrate the rubber, does it leak?
Or is the hole small enough that it doesn't really matter?
What kind of needle are you using, where did you get it? I can't imagine that an insulin-type syringe would let much Mobil1 grease through the hole! I would love to do this on my car while the joints are still OK.

Yes, but that doesn't matter. The grease is waterproof, so what leaks out of the hole will protect..
the grease you get inside. The ONLY bad part about poking the boot is, you can't really guarantee getting a lot of grease up on the top side of the ball, it only gets what it can scrape up there.. which is why I like the idea of grease fittings.
I've done it both way though, and a little new grease is better than the dry old crap in there.
As for the needle, I use a needle designed to be used with a grease gun..
