VDO Guages? Cheap crap or a good guage to retain stock look?

I'm sure you just saw my posts about the VDO and Omori guages... I want to get the Boost guage and EGT guage, maybe also the Air/Fuel guage. From VDo, these 3 guages would be about $100, from Omori they would be about $450 (going with AWE prices.) A local mechanic said he extremely dislikes VDO since they make crap.. to quote... "vdo makes the instrument clusters & remotes for all the audis. they also make the fuel sending units for the a6, which has been recalled 3 times..... vdo sucks, VDO SUCKS!" So, anyone have any ideas on this.
Should I go with the VDO guages? Any other guages retain the stock look?
Also thinking about these Nordskog guages...

I have that same Vision VDO boost gauge in my dash...
and it's visually good, but buzzes under hard acceleration and abrupt throttle changes. I'll probably try and fix it by putting some breather filter material in one of the fittings.
I know there are nicer fluid filled gauges out there, but this VDO gauge was less than $30 I think. Good enough for me.

whatever you do, dont get thier EGT guage, i know of a few people who've had the probe fail with only 10-15 hrs on it
my Boost guage buzzed from day one & nothing could get rid of it, eventually i replaced it
my personal fav are GReddy's guages, they may be pricey, but the quality is top notch

you can replace your gauge set more than 4 times before you'll be losing money
and I think that's bloody unlikely to happen. Your mechanic is basically saying "Yeah, Bosch makes tons of OEM parts for Audi, and some OEM parts fail so therefore Bosch sucks even if they can still make good parts."
