Wacky temp gauge (water)

I took my car in for 25,000 mile service yesterday. I could rant a while on the poor service, but mainly my water temp gauge doesn't work. I can take it back there tomorrow for another repair, but I'm afraid of what else may happen to the car. It is probably something they didn't hook up properly. Any suggestions on where to look? Anyone with a service manual? It this something that is reported by the ECU?
