Default Weird problem in rain...

I've had a weird problem with my A4 while driving it at highway speeds in heavy rain. This occurred again last night during heavy rain in the Denver area. I've got a modified '97 1.8TQM, with chip, exhaust, air filter, and lowered suspension. Whenever I'm driving in heavy rain and there is lots of water on the highway, I notice a weird staccato (sp?) noise and vibration which seems to be in the exhaust system. The engine momentarily loses power, and runs roughly, but the problem goes away quickly. Is it possible that water is getting in the exhaust system and somehow blocking the exhaust or something? Any ideas?

Default Well, if you had water in your exhaust that would cause it.

Usually when you get water in your exhaust, say while washing the car, and it gets into the engine, you will stall when you start the car. This might be happening for you, however with exhaust coming out, and the car running, it will not stall, just shudder. The staccato sound is probably the exhaust building up every so often and pushing out the water, thus making a louder sound everytime there is a buildup, and a normal sound after it pushed out water. But then the process repeats as more water gets into your exhaust. I really don't think you are supposed to be gettin water in your exhaust, even in heavy rain, but it sounds like that's what the problem is.
~Mike

Default Mine was installed with clamps only...

I figure there's a small opening in the front most joint and water is getting in. Not a lot of water, but just enough to make it gurgle a bit. I'm taking my car to Champagne on Tuesday for some work, so I may have them check the clamps, while it's up on the lift.

Default If you get water in your engine it will distroy it...

they call it hydrolock, water is not compressable and the connecting rods break. I'm thinking your just getting water in your muffler and increasing back pressure.
