Default Weird problem with Tiptronic or engine (long)

Yesterday I drove 50 miles in my 98.5 A4 1.8T with no problems. The Check engine light had been on for a day but I didn't notice any difference in engine performance. I made another short trip and turned off the engine. When I restarted the car several minutes later the engine was running very rough. After a minute it smoothed out but when I started to move the fun began. The car would bang into 2nd and then into 3rd. Since I was in a area with stop sighs every block or so I was wondering if the car was even drivable. When I shifted manually the problem was much less evident. Could the trans be affected this was from a defective sensor? I doesn't seem to be slipping and the fluid level looks normal. I limped home a mile or so and haven't driven it since. I'm wondering if an engine problem could affect the Tiptronic timing. Any thoughts would be appreciated. By the way, the car has 47,000 miles and I'm using a Wett chip. I haven't had any other serious problems. Maybe I'm overdue for one!

Sounds like a computer problem to me... I doubt it has anything to do with your tranny.

I hope that your right. It may be some kind of sensor that affects the computer settings.

Default It could be anything. A bad MAF or throttle position sensor perhaps..

I had a similar problem with my 98 2.8.. Not sure what the problem was as I fixed a number of things all at the same time (which is bad, becasue you never know which device the problem was with..)

My thinkin is if there was a real problem with the transmission, it would have gone into 'limp home' mode, which is hydraulic 4th gear. There is NO shifting at all, and the car will barely move from a stop.

Default Sounds like your maf might be bad.

I had the same issue with another car when we unplugged the maf. Seems the ecu and tip ecu get very confused since they use readings from the maf to set loads. So when they cant do that they dont know exactly what gear they should be in. The problem gets worse with the more throttle you add.
