What do you guys think of the new GTI?

I would go 1.8t, although I've only driven VR6's. Both are great rides,
and if they were AWD, that's what I would have. Of course, the 1.8t has a lot of tuning potential, but so does the VR6, with supercharging option relatively affordable. They are great cars, and I've loved 'em ever since I took a ride in an old Rabbit GTi years ago.

I know that the 1.8 is cheaper to mod; I never said the VR6 was the cheaper alternative.
It's just that the GTI is a V6 and might have more upper-end power due to the larger displacement. The 1.8 might not have the necessary pull up top.
But what do I know, my car's stock. I guess I shouldn't have said anything at all.
Just my $1.52's worth

nah man I just misread you. I thought you meant the VR6 was the better
tuning potential of the 2, which I don't agree. By better I mean cost/hp.
P.S. My car is stock too (shhh don't tell

Re: What do you guys think of the new GTI?
I just sold my 96' GTI-VR6 and now have a '01 1.8T Avant. I was driving both cars for a while during the process of selling the car so I did notice some differences in the two engine styles.
My VR6 can be seen at my web page just ignore the for sale stuff, I haven't had a chance to take off all that junk.
The VR6 pulled harder with less shifting work. I could pick almost any gear (third being the strongest) and get a lot of power out of the car for moving through Northern VA traffic. The VR6 seems stronger with less modification, since I just had a Garrett chip on the GTI and exhaust, although the 1.8T shows more promise for gains than the VR6 with modification. If you just want an out of the box car that you don't have to mess with that is still plenty quick the VR6 is a good choice, especially the newer models which are certainly quicker that my 96' was. Cost for VR6 mods also seems less expensive since my total cost for the chip and exhaust was roughly $675. The 1.8T chips are more pricey but you do get a lot more power for your money.
I'm happy that I made the switch from my old car since I have a chance to experience a whole new engine type with endless tuning options. The only thing I can't get used to is the soft suspension so for now I'm doing the suspension upgrade first because I can deal with a little less power but the couch style ride of the non-sport suspension is difficult to deal with. The H&R coilovers and MAS MGR 18's get installed in two weeks at AWE.
Hope this helps.

1.8t without question. VR6 just can't compete with a chipped 1.8t.
A chipped 1.8t has more power, better torque, lighter engine, easier to work on, cheaper, etc.....
