Default What exactly is ASR???

I recently bought a 98 A4 Avant with FWD. It has switchable ASR. The manual describes this ASR function somwhat ambiguously. What is ASR doing for me? Why is it switchable? Presuming it is normally ON, under what condition would I ever want to switch it OFF?
