searched but didn't find a good definition. What excactly do they do?

And i've gotten my tie rods, timing belt, and steering rack done at 86k, should i expect anything else to let go other than the control arms in terms of suspension and what not..?

If you're still on original shocks and springs they'll prolly start to go as well.
