Default What are the specs on manual transmission fluid? I want to change mine.

I did a search and I know the weight is 75W90, but I can't seem to determine for sure if the fluid is a GL4 or GL5?

Also, Red Line MT-90 seems to be the favorite, but I wonder if anyone has tried anything else like Royal Purple or Mobil 1. Right now I am leaning towards the Red Line fluid but I just want to know if there have been any good experinces using a different kind.

Also, did any of you notice a improvement in shifting after changing your fluid? Thank you in advance.

Default well I know you need this.....

Not to sure on the fluid type, you can always contact the stealer. You are gonna need some special tools, namely a triple square security bit. Click on the link at the bottom of the page. It is piece number 3357. $30.25 plus s/h. They will know exactly what you need.

it is the one to the left...

Default Thanks, but I knew about the tools. The big thing for me is, if the fluid is a GL4 or GL5?

The tool for the drain plug is a wierd one. I have never seen a socket like that before. Oh it is no big deal. Thanks again.

Default I put the Redline MT-90 in my FWD manual transaxle

and to be honest, I think it felt better with the OE stuff in there. I'm comparing this to the days when I drove an Integra and replacing the OE fluid with Redline MTL (lighter weight) was a huge improvement. Not so with my Audi. When it gets cold, I have trouble with 1-2 shifts (until it warms up). The OE stuff is fully synthetic and is what i would recommend.

If it's not GL-4, then a lot of people who have been using MT-90 are in trouble :-)

MT-90 is also fully synthetic. When cold, shifting is tough in my A4 with OE fluid as well.

Default Yeah that is a good point!

I am assuming you changed to MT-90. Do you think it made an improvement at all? Did the time it took for your shifting to smooth out reduce?

Default yeah, I doubt switching to an aftermarket fluid will help much...

There have been talks in the past that the OE fluid in the B5 is not synthetic. But now, more and more I hear that it is actually synthetic. And if so, changing from one synthetic 75w-90 to another can't possibly make a whole lot of difference.

BG Synchroshift II was also recommended as an alternate fluid, and my local mechanic swears by it.

That 1st to 2nd notchiness is just an Audi "trademark" thing :-)
