Wheel fell off on freeway....Updated with pics-

You're on to something there! Aftermarket rims with too large center,
so that the wheel center did not fit tightly onto the centering hub of the car. THEREFORE, the lugs had to take all the stress.... so when the car hit the curb at 80 MPH, it sheared the lug heads. Driver still smacked something very, very hard.

All 5 lugs snapped off....I didn't hit anything..... but luckly it was 3am,
and I was headed home from work. It was lucky that it was 3 am so the freeway was empty. A few of the lugs must have come loose, as I felt a vibration in the wheel before it came off. I thought I had a flat, as I entered a turn on the freeway and the weight transfered onto that wheel the vibrations got worse and I started to slow down when it came off. So my advice is to check your lugs after you have your car at any shop where they remove the wheels.

What's the inside diameter (centering hub) of those wheels?
You might be the lesson for others NOT to mount a wheel type which does not tight-fit the centering hub of the car. That centering hub, with a wheel tightly fit to it will take enough abuse that the entire rim could collapse around it without studs breaking, etc.
