when did your stock turbo die?
just out of curiosity. I'm at 137k now and have always used regular oil, I'm thinking I might want to start saving up for a new one in case this one takes the dirt nap soon. Would a k04 be a reasonable upgrade now, at the mileage I'm at? What kind of power can the stock clutch hold? I'm going to need a new one soon as is and I was thinking I should just go with the AWE stage 2 and get a new OEM flywheel(I'm not after a race car, and like nice drivability). Maybe I would be better off with a used k03...

It was broken when I got the car at 52k
but still drivable. The exhaust housing was cracked so I'm assuming the lady who had it before me didn't give it proper cool down. I took off the exhaust manifold at 78k and it was also cracked

mine was melted when i got it at 78k....
u have 135k? id say you ahve atleast another 100k miles left (for the engine itself, i couldnt say about the turbo, the early ones i guess were crap, the waste gate rods melted even the flap itself was kinda melted on mine), if u change your oil regularly, u use dino oil??? switch to synthetic!!! didnt u get ur sludge letter? oh and id say get the K04, the engine can handle it if its runnin good now. I have 115k on my car, i believe oirginal clutch, im quite hard on it, i ahve pretty extreme tuning for a K03 sport (mass air flows 170 m/s by 6000 rpm) so im prob close to a K04...in the mid range anyway, it dies up top. just dont do crazy launches and the clutch should be fine...one guy on here has a 98 with over 200k on it...bigger turbo (250 wheel hp i think rings a bell) stock clutch! a BUNCH of track days and auto-x sessions under his belt and his still runs good as far as i know.

I'm in a similar situation but have a Q
My turbo hasn't gone, but when it does, I'm wondering w/ a GIAC chipped car if I get a K04 will my car need a new exhaust to get power gains out of the K04?

from what ive read....
it dosent NEED it...but its highly recomended. AWE says you NEED it though, it may reduce the life of the turbo because of the extra back pressure, wich means higher exhaust temps. And you wont get the advertised gains i dont think if u keep stock exhaust. Basicaly my opinion is that yes, do exhaust if you are going to do a K04, but thats easy for me to say because i already have exhaust, but not a K04 yet...
BTW does your car make a tinny metalic rattling noise when you let off the gas in gear? how many miles do you ahve?
