Default Who here has done the A8 brake upgrade that is in the tech section...

... I was reading though it and noticed that the A8 rear brakes are 269mm x 20mm while the original A4 rear brakes are 245mm x 10mm. The article states that the original rear brake pads are used (10mm) so this means that the new disk will only have 10mm of the 20mm used. Do I have this right or am I confused?

I'm thinking of getting bigger brakes at some point in the future and just want to figure out what I need to get.

Kirk

Default The A4 and A8 use the same pads

The rotors are larger in diameter both front and rear on the A8, but the caliper/pad are the same. the A8 rotors have cast the swept area further out from the center of the disc.

Default Confused, the second number is the thickness...

10 mm = solid
20 mm = vented

Default Oh yea.

The rear caliper for the A8 isnt the same as the A4 (it has a 10mm wider space), but it uses the same pad. I didnt do the rear part or would have remembered that.

Personally, I dont see the value in doing the rear. The work done by the rear brakes decreases after the front upgrade. I used a precise measurement system known I call "average brake dust accumulation per day" to measure this. After the upgrade (using the same pads) and after a break-in period for the front rotors I saw an increase in average brake dust accumulation in front and a decrease in the rear.

Default I agree, I did't do the rears either...

and I like the "precise measurement system" you used to make the determination. :-)

Default Check out...

www.europeanspeed.com's project A4. They did the A8 brake upgrade and did a little write up on it. I'm thinking about it too.
