just a random letter, or is it something in German?

Default Humm. Well in 1994 the A8 was the first Audi production car with an all
aluminum body. Soon after the all aluminum body A4, and A6 were introduced. Maybe it means "aluminum"

just a guess.

The A4 and A6 were never all aluminum.
