Will 225/55/17 tires soften the ride any on my 2001.5 OEM sport suspension?

as a rule, the smaller that middle number the rougher the ride
Not sure what you're comparing it to... but generally the wider the tire, the greater the offset of the wheels and the slimmer the sidewall all lead to a stiffer ride. So the opposite might be what you're looking for.
My OEM wheels were 16X7 with 205/55/16. I put on 17X8 with 225/45/17 and the ride was much more responsive but hunted the troughs in the road. I thought the overall increase in road feel was preferable.

You're going about this all wrong.
You can downsize to a 205 55 16 tire (yes, that will require 16" rims).
You may run into clearance problems with expensive suspension components by doing what you're thinking about.
