Default Will socket really hide chip??? (more)

<br>As I'm trying to decide on a chip, I'm wondering the following about a socketed chip. Wouldn't Audi be able to tell when they examine the ECU (on the off chance that I ever had a warranty situation arise) that it had been modified (socket) anyway, even if the stock chip was put back in? And can't the dealer's machine tell if you have recently switched chips? I have no intention of lying about it if they ask me, so I'm wondering exactly what the advantages of a socketed chip would be for me, other than the possibility of this rumored tool that could someday flash a reprogrammed performance chip back to stock. Not trying to stir things up, just trying to learn the specifics.<p>BDW '99 1.8Tqms

Default Sockets, from an electronic hardware point of view...

are simply devices for convenience of exchanging components in a circuit without multiple re-soldering, thereby risking damage to the circuit.<p>A socket will not hide a new chip but also will not show a socketed original chip (if put back) as a foreign chip. <p>If you've ever seen the CPU socket in a PC and ever come accross CPU upgrades then you've pretty much seen an analogous application of sockets.<p>

Default No reason too..

If the dealership suspects a faulty ECU they just swap it out (99.9% of the time without looking into it)The factory unit has no interchangable parts. One of the sweet reasons that if the modified chip IS causing a problem (usually very remote) you could put back the stock chip to see if your problem goes away and is in fact a chip problem. I just leave in the wett 1bar, no one has ever given me a problem at the dealership. Now if I blew the turbo or parts there in - I'd swap back to the stock chip in a heartbeat just to avoid a possible a warranty hassle to be safe. ECU problems are far and few between but it can happen. The mdified chip is way too much fun to be without in my estimation.Try it you won't go back..

Default This can't be true

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it was my impression that a factory car doesn't have a socket for the chip. The chip vendors with socketed chips must remove the original chip, add the socket in its place, and then install their chip into the socket.<p>If this is all true, then it should be easy for any technician to simply look at the ECU (after removing the cover) and tell whether the chip is sitting in a socket or not.<p>Since the ECU did not have a socket from the factory, I think that that is evidence of chipping, whether the original chip is in the car or not.<p>Am I wrong about this?<br>

Default Not exactly

The key word is IF. Your local service tech isn't going to open the ecu up. Hence, if you swap back to stock all they'll see on the diagnostic tool is that the ecu lost power X number of times. IF the ecu gets replaced and sent back to the factory, well IF they crack it open to examine it and determine the cause of the problem...they'll notice immediately.<p>Regards,<br>Rodney<p>'99 A4 1.8tqms

Default I think you just said the same thing as me in different words.

The original question was "will a socket really hide a chip?".<p>My answer, and yours too, is that a socket will not hide a chip from a technician that decides to check for one.<p>True, technicians do not go looking for chips without a reason to do so, but the bottom line is, if you have a socketed ECU, it will stick out like a sore thumb once the ECU cover is removed.<br>

Default not only that

but if a technician opens up the box, and sees a non-factory solder job, he can tell to. beleive me, i have seen people butcher ECU boxes. if not done right, you can tell the instant you open it, as a matter of fact, sometimes you can tell before you open it.
