windshield wiper problem

Yesterday while I had my windshield wipers going, my avant made this strange vibrating/grinding noise for a couple minutes. While I was hearing the noise, my windshild wipers stopped working. Once the noise stopped, my wipers worked again, but now they stop in the middle of the windshield. Has anyone had this problem before, or knows what the solution is? Thanks!

Sounds like the wiper motor/linkage unit

Gear unit that couples the motor drive to the linkage. Far as I know from looking at these on other cars I've had this is all one piece.
