You know what? This was an eerily brilliantly executed plan....(GRRRRR)
I didn't see any of the TV broadcasts today, so pardon me if I'm repeating some things that strategists have said on the air but....
1. They used airplanes (which are essentially flying bombs) to keep the number of people involved down - no sources for explosives or other instruments of mass destruction = less people to spill the beans. All you have to do is get one person, capable of flying, on the airplane with a small knife. Passengers and staff generally probably believed if they just waited the psycho out, they'd get home safely to their families (GRRRRRRR)
2. These bombs come with the added "bonus" (GRRRRRR) of being loaded with Americans
3. They regularly fly around the area with, in reality, little REAL control over where they go
4. They picked planes that would be massive, and loaded with gas to travel cross country, so the explosion would be bigger.
5. They got media attention (the fuel that terrorism thrives on) with the first plane, and then had prime news coverage for the second.

Just implying that these pilots knew how to fly these planes well. They could not have just been
amateurish pilots trained on small planes or simulators. They must have flown in manual mode, and they were able to maneuver these huge birds in a tight airspace. Yes, these skyscrapers are huge, but slamming into them implies familiarity with and non trivial experience on these planes. This means lots of $$$ behind this terrorist operation.
