ZERO Boost problem

Default ZERO Boost problem

Hello,

I'm getting ZERO boost from my 1.8t's turbo. Anybody have this problem or any ideas? I already had the relief valve replaced by my audi dealer to no avail. I installed a vacuum/boost gauge so that I could have an objective measure of the loss of power.

I've done some limited searching on this forum, but I haven't seen anything quite like this. However, if I have overlooked a pertinent thread, please forgive.

Default Do you hear the turbo spool up? Does it sound different?

Possiblilites are:

busted compressor shaft
stuck wastegate
busted freq valve.
any vac/boost lines related to above
freaky ECU problem
something caused the car to go into limp mode.

Default I had the ECU problem. 98 1.8T QMS, with Wett 1.0bar chip.

I was driving in the mountains and stopped for gas on the way home and nothing! No boost at all. I brought it to the dealer and they said the ECU was shot. The interesting thing is the car ran fine, just no boost! They put in a new ECU and the car seems to run fine as stock, but it's not clear if I am getting boost yet. I don't hear any turbo whine, I'm wondering if there are other problems and if I should reinstall the Wett chip.

Default boost problem

Ed, what's the difference between a wastegate and a freq valve? Which one of these is the bypass valve?

Default well..

The wastegate dumps/diverts exhaust gasses from the exhaust side of the turbo. The freq valve is part of the system that controls the wastegate. The bybass valve is completely different, and is on the charged air side of the turbo, and shunts pressurized air back to the intake side of the turbo, thereby reducing backpressure stress on the compressor vanes and helps with quick spoolup.

Thanks for the info. I am still wondering if I have a problem. I'm going to put a vac/boost gauge on and see what it says. Then maybe back to the dealer again...

Default I had this problem, needed new turbo and throttle body....

I dropped the car off for the 25K service and it had no boost when I got it back. Audi paid for all of it.

Default Same with my '97 1.8T when the wastegate rod broke....

...no boost (or at least none that I could feel). Car ran like a slug, but it did run and was driveable as long as you didn't need to pass anyone.

Default I hope your problem is minor but if you have a wastegate problem and you are off warranty (more)

you might want to look at the classifieds. There is a K03 for sale ($300 I think) and a brand new K04 for $800. Unfortunatley, this would not be the first wastegate rod/turbo failure for the '97 and '98 vintage 1.8Ts
