'03 A4 3.0 rattling sound at high RPMs
I had a wraspy rattling sound coming from what I thought was the exhaust but went to dealer and found that brand new model with 12 miles on it had the same noise. If car is in neutral and you rev the engine there is a clinking sound that you can hear from underneath rear of car. Audi told me there was nothing wrong but I have had neighbors tell me it sounds like **** as I take off down the street. Just installed a Remus exhaust and it still has the clinking sound. Possibly coming from the cat converter? Anyone experiencing the same! I was told bu Audi unless it is brought to their attention many times they will not do anything about it!

I think I have your answer...?
I had my A4 3.0q for about 3 days and a few hundred miles when I heard it. I was going down a residential street, so I stopped, and the sound stopped. I put the car in Neutral and revved the engine, which increased the sound. After a few revs I heard a loud TinG! ClanG! ClunK! Ok, sound was gone now. I stepped out of the car and found a large bolt with part of the head ground off.
Service guys said it was a transmission mount bolt. Nice, Audi!

Have you heard anything since?
Do you know exactly where that bolt came from or no? I have also noticed that the car seems to do it maybe a little bit more frequently when the car is cold. anyone experience the same?
