5-speed or 6-speed, both with short shifters

Well, it's a completely different transmission...
I've yet to drive the 1.8T 6spd, but it is supposedly a big improvement. Not only does the extra gear drop the rpms quite a bit, but the shifting is supposed to be more precise. I think you'd have to drive them both to decide if it matters to you, but if you do a lot of highway traveling, I think you'll appreciate the lower strung 6 spd...

Re: 5-speed or 6-speed, both with short shifters
Well, I think I am qualifed in saying that as the "past" owner of a 03 A4 1.8TQM with 31,000 miles (just traded) for a 04 A4 1.8TQM, there is NOOOOOOOOO comparison between the 5speed and 6speed. The 5spd shifter feels like something you would find in a hyundai after rowing the 6 spd. The gears now "click" when selecting them with a postive feel.
6th gear? Typically I was driving about 75 to 80 going to work. In 5th that worked out to be about 3400 - 3500 rpms (high enough that the engine could be heard). Now at 75 - 80 I am showing about 2700 to 2800 rpms. Major difference in (my mind) the amount of engine noise. Also, I was very surprised to see that the car actually has the nuts to pull in 6th gear. Can easily jump to 90, 95 or 100 with a simple push of the pedal.
If I would have known the 6spd was that nice, I wouldn't have bought my 03. I would have waited. I like 4cyl turbo motors and it seems that this turbo motor and 6spd are a perfect match.

Get the 6SP... is more fun to drive...-m-
I mean, is not like you use the 6th from block to block, but, when you decide to push the car on a highway, you're going fast and still have another gear to let the engine breathe... I often forget about the 6th b/c on 5th you pretty much know if you're ahead or behind..
It's funny to see Accord and Grand Am driver's face when you engage 6th and leave them behind.
On the other hand, in stop and go traffic sometimes is a bit of pain when you try to block the idiot on the other line that have been zigzagin' all the time. It revs really fast and you have to shift all the time on this cases.
